JAMB Reinstates FUTA Graduate’s Admission After Fake Admission Controversy

JAMB Reinstates FUTA Grad After Admission Controversy

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reinstated the admission status of Jamiu Basola, a Civil Engineering graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), after months of controversy over alleged possession of a fake admission letter.

Basola, who graduated in 2024 with a CGPA of 4.41, was flagged during his final clearance when FUTA’s Student Affairs Division informed him that he could not be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) because his name was not on the official JAMB matriculation list.

“I was advised to check the matriculation list, and that was when I saw the label: ‘fake admission.’ I couldn’t access my JAMB portal either,” Basola said.

Despite writing to FUTA’s Registrar, Vice-Chancellor, and Admissions Committee, the issue persisted. However, after sustained advocacy by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), JAMB finally unlocked Basola’s portal and added his name to the matriculation list.

Speaking to journalists, Basola confirmed the development:

“My portal is now accessible. I can reprint my documents, and my name now appears on the matriculation list. I’ve not been mobilised for NYSC yet, but this is a step forward.”

⚖️ NANS Hails Victory for Justice

In a statement on Monday, NANS National PRO, Adeyemi Ajasa, called the outcome a “significant victory for justice and student welfare,” crediting the resolution to the intervention of NANS President Comrade Olushola Oladoja and efforts from NANS South-West Zone D.

“Jamiu’s victory is a triumph for every Nigerian student. His case reflects the dangerous impact of system lapses on innocent students,” Ajasa stated.

He also praised FUTA’s Civil Engineering Department for formally reaching out to JAMB to clarify Basola’s admission history.

🧾 JAMB’s Earlier Stance

Basola’s case gained public attention after he shared his ordeal on social media. In its initial response, JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, described him as an “unknown entity” to the board and stated that the admission letter in his possession “did not emanate from its system.”

JAMB had also downplayed social commentary about Basola being an orphan or from a disadvantaged background, urging him instead to disclose how he obtained the admission documents.

⏭️ Next Steps

NANS confirmed it would monitor the situation to ensure Basola is included in the next NYSC mobilisation batch and warned institutions against repeating similar lapses.

“We will continue to hold institutions accountable. Nigerian students deserve protection—not punishment—from system failures,” Ajasa added.
