Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), formerly known as Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), is Nigeria’s first specialized institution for primary education. History and Development

LASUED was founded in December 1994 as the Lagos State College of Primary Education (LACOPED) in response to the National Policy on Education, which mandated the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) as the minimum qualification for teachers in Nigeria. The college was established to provide pre-service and in-service teacher training for the primary school system. It was later renamed Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED) in April 2007 to honor Michael Otedola, a former governor of Lagos State.

Situated in Noforija, near Epe, MOCPED became the first tertiary institution in Nigeria focused on training teachers for the Universal Basic Education System. It began operations in December 1994, starting with 82 pioneering students and later expanding to offer various NCE and degree programs in collaboration with Ekiti State University and the University of Ibadan.
