Situated in Akure, Ondo State, South Western Nigeria, the Federal institution of Technology Akure (often known as FUT Akure or just FUTA) is an institution owned by the federal government. The institution is renowned for turning out graduates that possess a sufficient theoretical understanding of technology and is designed to influence the economic development of both the state and the entire country.

In addition, a few other universities were founded concurrently with FUTA. These include the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB); the Federal University of Technology, Minna; the Federal University of Technology, Yola; and the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi (now known as Tafawa Balewa University).
