The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that funding challenges are responsible for the delay in implementing the new ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members. Despite the Federal Government’s approval in July 2024 and promises to commence payments by February 2025, corps members are still receiving ₦33,000, leading to growing frustration amid the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

Why is the NYSC ₦77,000 Allowance Delayed?

According to Carol Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, the scheme is currently pursuing the necessary cash backing for the allowance increase. She stated that while efforts are ongoing, the process requires time and due diligence before the funds can be disbursed.

She also pointed out that the new NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, is still familiarizing himself with the situation. Corps members have been urged to remain patient as the issue is being addressed at the highest levels.

Embu stated:
“We are actively working on securing the cash backing for the increased allowance. Our new Director-General is still getting up to speed with the matter. While we cannot specify an exact date for the payments, rest assured that updates will be provided as soon as we have clarity.”

Government’s Response and Next Steps

While the NYSC has not provided a definite timeline, Embu emphasized that the Minister overseeing the NYSC is directly involved and possesses more details about the disbursement process. She reassured corps members that updates would be shared once all arrangements are finalized.

This delay has left many corps members struggling financially, as the current ₦33,000 stipend is considered inadequate for their basic needs, especially amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.

What Corps Members Should Expect

  • Delayed Payment Resolution: The government is working on securing funds, but no exact date has been given.
  • Potential Gradual Implementation: Payments may be phased in once funding is available.
  • Ministerial Oversight: The Minister in charge of NYSC has the final say, and corps members should expect updates from official sources.

As corps members await the implementation of the ₦77,000 NYSC allowance, stakeholders continue to push for a swift resolution. The NYSC has assured the public that efforts are ongoing, but patience is required as the necessary financial arrangements are being finalized.
