The Enugu State Police have been accused of halting the search for Uzodinma Nkwachi Florence, a missing University of Nigeria (UNN) student, despite collecting ₦25,000 as a “tracking fee.”
The Incident
Florence, who has been missing for over a month, was reportedly traced to Calabar, Cross River State. However, the police claimed they could not proceed with the investigation due to a lack of contact with their counterparts in Calabar.
Criticism of Security Measures
Barrister Ege Obetta, a constitutional rights advocate, highlighted the challenges Florence’s father faced, including:
The reluctance of the UNN Chief Security Officer (CSO) to assist initially.
The police demanding ₦25,000 before agreeing to track the missing student.
The police instructing Florence’s father to travel to Calabar personally to rescue her, after claiming to have traced her location.
Obetta has described these actions as a failure of duty and called on Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi to intervene urgently.
Call for Action
The situation has raised concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in handling cases of missing persons and the financial burdens placed on families during investigations. Advocacy groups are urging the police to prioritize the case and fulfill their responsibility to ensure Florence’s safe return.
