Offering a wide range of affordable products, including clothing, home goods, houseware, and groceries, Dollar General continues to serve millions of customers across the United States with its commitment to low-cost shopping.

Dollar General Logo History

The Dollar General logo has been consistently simple and text-based, with only subtle changes over the years. The company's visual identity has remained strong, making the logo instantly recognizable not only in the U.S. but around the world.

1955 – 1972: The First Dollar General Logo

The first logo, introduced in the 1950s, featured a bold, black sans-serif font on a bright yellow rectangular background. The word “Dollar” was the primary focus, written in thick, straight lines with elongated tails on the “D” and “R.” Below it, “General Stores” appeared in a thinner, more delicate font. This classic design laid the foundation for the brand's enduring visual identity.

1966: A Brief Redesign

In 1966, Dollar General briefly adopted a new logo that featured bold, uppercase letters in black against a light background. This simple, solid design was framed within a horizontal rectangular border. However, this version only lasted a few months before being updated again.

1966 – 1967: Refining the Logo

Later in 1966, the logo underwent a second redesign. The text was reversed, now appearing in white on a black background. The font became stronger and bolder, with thicker lines and modern contours. This redesign was a more confident version of the logo, though it remained in use for less than a year.

1967 – 1972: Elegant Simplicity

The 1967 redesign refined the previous logo even further. The white text was lightened to a soft gray, reducing the contrast for a more elegant and subdued look. This version kept the modern and bold style while appearing calmer and more sophisticated, remaining largely unchanged until 1972.

1972 – 1984: A New Concept

In 1972, the logo underwent a more significant transformation. The “Dollar” wordmark was enlarged and placed above the “General Stores” text, which was now in a geometric sans-serif typeface. This version of the logo, drawn in black and set against a white background, gave the company a modern and streamlined appearance.

1984 – 1995: The Yellow Background

The 1984 redesign introduced a vibrant yellow background, with the “Dollar” and “General Stores” text remaining in black. The “Dollar” wordmark was placed to the right of “General Stores,” which was split into two lines. This design, set in a black rectangular frame with rounded corners, became a staple of Dollar General’s identity for over a decade.

1995 – 2009: Simplification

In 1995, the company simplified its name to just “Dollar General,” and the logo was updated to reflect this change. The black lettering remained on a bright yellow background, but both parts of the name were now presented in the same size and font style. This made the logo appear more balanced, solid, and unified.

2009 – Today: A Modern Look

The 2009 redesign brought a more modern and sleek look to the Dollar General logo. While the yellow and black color palette remained unchanged, the rectangular shape was softened into a more rounded design. The font was also updated to give the logo a contemporary feel while retaining its strong, recognizable presence.

Dollar General's logo is a perfect example of a text-based visual identity that evolves subtly over time while maintaining a strong, recognizable brand image. The bold, bright, and clean design reflects the company's dynamic and customer-focused ethos, ensuring it remains a symbol of affordability and accessibility in the retail market.
