The Reading Royals, based in Reading, Pennsylvania, are a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL. Originally founded in 1991 as the Columbus Chill, the franchise relocated to Reading in 2001, where it adopted the name "Reading Royals" for the start of the 2001-2002 season.
Logo Evolution
1991–1999: Columbus Chill
When the team was first established as the Columbus Chill, their logo featured a two-level inscription with “Chill” in bold, clean letters, placed above “Columbus” in extended, all-caps text. The “Chill” part was decorated with sharp white lines to convey a sense of motion and strength, reflecting the team’s energetic and competitive nature.
2001–Today: Reading Royals
Upon relocating to Reading, the team was renamed the Reading Royals, a name chosen through a Name-the-Team contest. The name was fitting, aligning with their affiliate teams, the Manchester Monarchs and the Los Angeles Kings. The team's logo features a royal lion head adorned with a crown, representing the "royal" theme. The lion head is primarily purple, with accents of silver, black, and white, symbolizing strength and majesty.
In 2008, the Royals introduced a refined version of their logo. While the design remained similar to the earlier one, the updated logo included the team name “Reading Royals,” with “Reading” in silver and “Royals” in purple with silver trim.
The team's logo's success lies in its bold and regal color scheme—purple, black, silver, and white—which has become strongly associated with the Royals’ identity over the years.
